Stop Court Democracy

Courts should not be installing political office holders

The President and every governor in Nigeria received their certificat of office from the courts. Every election is challenged and all top political office holders did not get to the office through elections only. The courts are replacing the ballot system. In a country where the judiciary is corrupt, many of the judgements are bought. Demoracy is in danger.

We demand that where an election results in a dispute, the court should only order another ballot. The decision should always be with the people and not the election tribunals. Join us to demand that our ballots count, no matter how many times we have to vote.

Elections, adult suffrage, democracy, voting, ballots

Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, the judiciary has gained more power in deciding who has been elected by the people. Every governorship election has been decided by the courts. There is an urgent need to reduce the role of the judiciary in deciding the outcome of elections. While the courts have always adjudicated on election matters in Nigeria, it is becoming excessive. Non-electoral institutions should not take over the electoral system.

  • Make elections matter
  • Reduce dependence on the courts
  • Restore confidence in the electoral system
  • Build a strong and trusted democratic culture
  • Stop corrupt politicians and judges from taking over

The Story of us

How did this come to our attention?

The sheer number of court cases after the election is disturbing. From the presidency to the local levels, every election is now decided in the courts.

Financial figures (e.g. tax refund, revenue from fundraising, revenue from sale of goods and services or revenue from investment) are indicators to assess the financial sustainability of a charity, especially to charity evaluators. This information can impact a charity’s reputation with donors and societies, and thus the charity’s financial gains.

Charitable organizations often depend partly on donations from businesses. Such donations to charitable organizations represent a major form of corporate philanthropy.
